Small Business Starting - Business vs Home Telephone
To reduce the costs of starting a business, many home-based business owners use their residential telephone to run their companies until they can afford to pay for a business telephone. As an example, when you apply for a residential account with the telephone company, they will assign a main number and a second number with an identifying ring. Many new owners use their second line as their business number. The problem here is that the telephone company does not recognize residential telephone numbers as business telephone accounts. Neither will they list your residential number in the business section of the telephone book. Only when you pay for a business telephone number will the telephone company offer you all the benefits that goes with it.
To get a telephone for your business, you need to contact the Business Telephone Department of the local telephone company in your area. The telephone company may require you to make a deposit before they will connect the service. Your monthly bill will be based on the type of telephone service you requested for the business. There are additional fees for services such as call waiting, call forwarding, answer call, and other features. These special services should be discussed with a telephone representative.
The name of the business will be listed in the business section of the telephone book. If you want an advertisement placed in the Yellow Pages directory, you should call the telephone company to discuss the size of the advertisement. With most business telephones, all of the incoming calls are free, but there is a fee for the outgoing calls. This may vary from state to state.
Before connecting the telephone, the company will ask for the name and address of the business. They may also ask for the name of an officer whom they can contact should they have any questions about your business.
